One of the most popular questions we hear from new painters is, “Can I use base paint without tint?” You’d imagine that when the base paint has the word “paint” in it, it will behave like paint.
But answer is no. Technically, base paint without a tint is appropriate. It will dry after you have applied it to your walls.
Even if you were only looking for white, you won’t be able to get the color you want without tint. Furthermore, if there is a paint colour underneath, it will bleed through.
However, recruiting a specialist on a regular basis can be costly. Why pay someone to paint your house when you can do it yourself and make it look more artistic and beautiful?
So, if you’re looking for contractor-quality painting and need some assistance, we’ve got you covered. We’ll answer your questions and walk you through the entire process. Let’s take a look at some of the stuff that can help you.
What is base paint?
A base is a paint medium designed specifically for mixing colors. It comes as a surprise to learn that the base is not meant to be painted at all. The characteristics of base paint are as follows:
- The base, as the name implies, is intended to be a starting point from which to work, especially when creating specific paint tints.
- For all of the time, the base is one shade of white or another. The explanation for this is that a base should be used first, then a color should be applied before you achieve the perfect tint and hue.
- When you open a can of base paint, it normally appears white. The majority of base paint, on the other hand, is transparent.
- The clear portion will interact with the colorant’s materials, effectively accepting the solids and resulting in the final tint. When the colourants are mixed into the transparent material, the color of the paint changes.
- Instead of making and selling every colour imaginable, manufacturers and distributors save millions of dollars in packaging, inventory allocations, and wasted money by doing so.
- All they have to do is make a large quantity of the base, then a small quantity of the tint, and the buyer can get whatever color they want with relative ease.
What do you mean by base number?
On a paint can, the base number refers to the different base paints that can be used to begin the mixing process. The base is the foundation upon which the other colors are painted.
The paint used to tint (or change the color) your paint is referred to as the base number. The darker the tinting paint color is, the higher the base number. Base 1 is used for pastels, base 2 is used for slightly darker colors, and base 4 is used for extreme darker colors.
Apart from the fact that each base has a different composition, base 4 has more space in the can for the addition of tinting colours than base 1.
The base number isn’t as critical as the finished color of the blended paint if you’re just buying it and not mixing it yourself. Keep in mind, however, that darker-tinted paints can fade more quickly, particularly when used outside.
What is tint paint?
The method of tinting paint involves applying colourants to produce the desired color. Since colourants are condensed paint pigments, a small amount may make a significant difference in the color of the paint.
When you have your base paint tinted at the shop, it’s put into a system that dispenses colourants in precise numbers.
The employee enters a color code, and the machine applies colorant to produce the desired hue. When you have your base paint tinted at the shop, it’s put into a system that dispenses colorants in precise numbers.

A number of colourants are dispensed when you have paint tinted in a shop. Much of the time, you won’t know who’s involved. Furthermore, since you do not know which ones are already present in your current color, deciding what to add is normally a guessing game.
It’s important to remember that changing the color of a paint at home is difficult. Yes, using white to lighten paint is a simple process. However, if you have a forest green and want to make it complement a teal from a paint swatch, it’s not so simple.
If you’re looking for an easy way to tint paint at home, look no further. If you have a rich forest green color and want it to be more of a medium grey, you should apply white paint to it. The green paint would be brighter when it had been stirred than it had been before.
What issues do tinted paints cause?
The following are some of the drawbacks of tinted paint:
- The physical properties of paints containing minimal concentrations of universal colourants are generally unaffected.
- As massive volumes are used, however, properties like curing time, early and final water resistance, abrasion resistance, cleaner resistance, burnishing, and uniformity suffer.
- Universal colourants are liquids that contain a colour dye distributed in a mixture of surfactants and a solvent, most commonly a glycol.
- The amount of pigment depends on the form, color intensity, and surface area of the pigment. Lampblack, a finer i.e. high surface area pigment, is used in smaller doses than red iron oxide, a larger i.e. low surface area pigment.
- Surfactants, glycol, and, in some cases, an extender pigment make up the rest of the substance. The weakness stems from the properties of the surfactants and glycol, which enable the paint film to remain in the paint film longer while also preserving water solubility and softness in the dry film.
- Exterior paints with high levels of universal colorants can be more susceptible to ‘wash-out’ from dew or rain than ‘non tints’ or low level tints over longer periods of time. Surfactant bleed, which occurs as a transparent or yellowish material on the surface of the paint and can run off into adjoining surfaces, is another unusual issue that can occur.
- Waterborne coatings have the most issues, but alkyd coatings may also be affected. Alkyds usually exhibit lower gloss levels and some softness in the film over a longer period of time than average.
- Paints manufactured with paint pigments applied during the production process, although mostly reduced in color variety, have the advantage of being less susceptible to moisture than a heavily tinted foundation.
- These should be taken into account when painting exterior surfaces, particularly those that are constantly wet, or when applying paint in inclement weather.
What are the key benefits of tinting ?
The use of a tinting process offers a number of benefits, including increased flexibility and reliability in the supply of paints and coatings.
✓ Service tailored to your needs:
The ability to provide the customer with a more personalised tinting package that meets all of their needs, thus increasing the efficiency of the service provided and its added value.
✓ Any color formula is easily accessible:
Tinting allows for the reproduction of any formula or colour variation without a physical support, in addition to providing large libraries of color formulas.
There will be no more bottlenecks or long waits. Any paint, in any quantity, can be accessed instantly.
✓ More room and less items:
Tinting helps you to make room for other objects or items in your storage space. Using such a diverse palette of colours would be impossible otherwise.
Tint paint helps to save money by using exact and accurate dosages for each color requirement.
✓ Ability to act independently:
The use of a tinting device gives the consumer control over their manufacturing processes, allowing them to be more agile and effective.
Can I Use Base Paint Without Tint?
Yes, that is right. A base color without a gloss may be used. It makes no difference what kind of base paint you have. Whatever base you choose, it can be untinted light base paint or untinted deep base paint.
Technically, you can use a base color with no gloss or even a medium base without any additional tinting. These can be applied and dried in the same way that tinted paint can. However, the outcomes are not as predicted.
Even though you preferred white paint, the lack of tint could prevent you from getting the shade you want. More specifically, untinted colour is more translucent. To render white less translucent and pull out the pigment, it needs colorant.
It is for this reason that applying a tint or colorant is advised. Otherwise, you’ll see the hue of the surface beneath if you use white paint that doesn’t have any gloss or extra shading.
When you use a thick base paint with no tint, the result is much worse. This means that even though you use a dark pigment, as it dries, it becomes much more translucent. As a consequence, the colour doesn’t do anything to hide what’s beneath.
Since most paint bases lack additional pigments, it’s difficult to achieve the desired tints and tones. They do, though, include the basic neutral pigments, and you can use it as a standard paint at any time.
The tinting is entirely dependent on your requirements. If the hue doesn’t look right to you and you want to change it, you can tint it to your liking. You will use it as standard paint if the options fit the bases.

Steps for painting with a base paint without tint
If you want to paint with base paint that isn’t tinted, these are the steps to take.
Step 1: Choose your favourite base color.
To begin, go to the local DIY (Do It Yourself) or hardware store and get a variety of colour swatches. You must find the color that is the nearest match to the one you are searching for.
Step 2: Get a good amount of the base paint color.
Once you’ve decided on a base color, you’ll need to buy plenty of it to cover the required surface.
Step 3: Gather the painting tools.
Gather the required painting equipment, such as a painting brush, a ladder, and a cleaning cloth.
Step 4: Start painting.
Start painting and complete your job.
What do I do if I make the mistake of using base paint that isn’t tinted?
Don’t worry if you accidentally used base paint without tint. By taking the actions outlined below, the condition can be easily remedied.
👉 Allow the untinted base paint to dry. That way, fresh paint won’t threaten to blend with the old. The fresh coat would actually be applied on top of the untinted base coat.
👉 Decide if you want your current base paint tinted or whether you want to buy new paint. You would be able to return it to the hardware store and get some colourant applied if you just used a bit. Then you will use the remaining items as normal.
👉 Any base paints can’t be mixed to make individual shades. Having a white Deep Base or Base 4 colour, for example, is unlikely to succeed.
👉 Buying fresh paint – either metallic paint or base paint that has been tinted in-store – is the best option in such situations. You should ensure that you have the look you want and that the paint level is adequate for your needs.
👉 Color the walls with your fresh colour or the now-tinted base paint. There should be no problems when applying the paint or when it dries.
